The 5th edition of these games created by Prince Harry in favor of the wounded who have served their country took place in The Hague in April. Among the participants, Laurent Fournier represented his department and his country as a member of the French team for the injured in Carcassonne.

He explains that he is exhausted, but at the moment “carried by the adrenaline and the atmosphere of the games“. Laurent Fournier participated in several events of the Invictus Games 2022, a multi-sport competition for wounded war veterans and people with disabilities. The athlete was selected for archery, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball and for the rower’s event. This event brings for him within this community, “the values of sport, cohesion and a social life“. He affirms that “life does not stop at our wounds“.

The last edition of the Invictus, highly publicized internationally, made it possible to make the event known to other war wounded and to the civilian world. To show that a life was still possible after the accidents. Today, Laurent is 51 years old. He is a member of the 3rd Parachute Regiment of Carcassonne, affiliated with the Marine Infantry (RPIMa). His career began in 1991. It was interrupted by his accident in 2013: during a jump, his parachute did not open. Following this, Laurent was hospitalized for many months for functional and neurological rehabilitation. He was then able to follow numerous courses led by the Army’s Casualty Assistance Cell and was selected for the Marines Corps Trial in 2019 in the United States. Since then, he has participated in many other competitions, such as this 5th edition of the Invictus Games, during which his team won a good number of games: “We enhanced our colors by bringing back 14 medals for France! The strong cohesion of the group has allowed us to go beyond our expectations and thus send a message to all our brothers in the army, wounded or not.“. For his part, Laurent finished 6th in archery.

Like these events, many national partners who support them are represented in the region, particularly in Carcassonne: Gueules Cassés, Bleuet de France, Médaille Militaire, the Amical du 3 or the National Union of Paratroopers.
