Cabal and Farah are in the Madrid final after beating Murray and Venus – Tennis – Sports

Colombian doubles players Juan Sebastián Cabal and Robert Farah face this Sunday, at 8:30 am (Star+), the pair made up of the Dutch Wesley Koolhof and the British Neal Skupski, in the final of the Masters 1,000 in Madrid.

The Caleños defeated this Saturday the duo of Briton Jamie Murray and New Zealander Michael Venus, eighth favorites in the tournament, 7-6 (3) and 6-3, after an hour and a half of fighting. Their rivals, current No. 16 and No. 17 in the ranking, beat Pole Hubert Hurkacz and American John Isner in the semifinals, both also participating in the singles modality of the contest, by 7-6 (7) and 7-5, in one hour and 45 minutes.

On the brick dust of Madrid, after a difficult debut, a non-existent second match (due to the withdrawal of their rivals), an outstanding quarter-final game and a semifinal in which they managed to save a set point in the first sleeve, Cabal and Farah have in their hands the opportunity to get their first title of 2022.

This year, the Colombian duo has not had much luck. At the Australian Open, the first grand slam of the season, they were eliminated in the second round. Then, at the ATP 500 tournaments in Acapulco and Rio de Janeiro, they said goodbye after unusually missing several match points in the super tie-break in the quarterfinals and first round, respectively. In Indian Wells, the first Masters 1,000 of the year, they said goodbye in the second phase. In Miami, they left after losing the first game. At the Monte Carlo Masters, they lost the final against the current number one in the world, the Anglo-Saxons Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. At the ATP 500 in Barcelona, two weeks ago, they fell in the quarterfinals against the Germans Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies. Now, in the Spanish capital, they have the chance to win the 20th trophy of their joint career in what will be their 41st final on the professional circuit and the seventh in the 1,000 category tournaments.

In this Sunday’s match, Cabal and Farah will face Koolhof and Skupski for the first time, two rivals who, unlike them, have had an outstanding 2022, since they have kept the ATP titles in Melbourne, Adelaide and Doha; all three on hard court.

Colombian tennis players only have two Masters trophies in their history, the ones they won in Rome, in 2018 and 2019. The last title they lifted on the circuit was the ATP 500 in Vienna, in October of last year. If they win the final, Cabal and Farah, current n°13 in the world, will return to the ‘top 10’ of the world ranking.
