BBL: Alex is retiring after a “long and beautiful journey”.

It was in his hometown of Munich, of all places, that Alex King took his last steps on the floor. There could hardly have been a more fitting conclusion for the record player in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). “It was a very emotional farewell for me in this hall, I can hardly describe my feelings,” said the 37-year-old from s.Oliver Würzburg after his 638th appearance in the upper house.

The career of the small forward from Ansbach began more than 20 years ago in the youth of FC Bayern. He returned to his first club in 2016 via stations in Frankfurt, Bonn, Würzburg and Berlin. On loan from Bayern, King made his last game for Würzburg on Sunday, his last game ever. The fact that it was clearly lost in the end with 57:92 was ultimately a minor matter.

BBL: King speaks of a long and beautiful journey

“It was a long and beautiful journey, I will miss the boys on the field above all. I was also very happy to be able to play with such a team in Würzburg again at the end,” said “BBL-Methusalix” ( FC Bayern) King: “I was warmly welcomed and said goodbye to every BBL hall this season, and I would like to thank all the clubs for that.”

The fans celebrated King, three champions (1x with Frankfurt, 2x with Munich) and three cup winners (2x with Berlin, 1x with Munich), in the Audi Dome with chants. FC Bayern presented the deserving player with a photo canvas as a gift. The veteran had to play the “last dance” for 30 minutes because Würzburg only had seven players available.

He should stay in first place in the BBL ranking for a long time. Of all those who are still active, Karsten Tadda (538 games, Telekom Baskets Bonn) has the best chance of breaking the record.
