Atletico fans dig out Thibaut Courtois name tag after president’s call | Remarkable

Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will never again be Atletico’s best friend. Following a call from Atletico president Cerezo, they removed Courtois’ nameplate at Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico’s stadium, today.

“If anyone wants to take Courtois’s name tag away, come with a shovel and a pick and remove the tag,” Atletico president Enrique Cerezo said in an interview after Real Madrid’s Champions League win.

And the Atletico fans obeyed their president. Later in the day, images surfaced of Courtois’s excavated nameplate falling loose on a staircase.

This time I’m on the right side of history

It is clear that the Atletico fans will never accept that Courtois is making good again with the nemesis.

But there was another reason for the nameplate debacle. Courtois’ statement before the Champions League final.

“This time I’m on the right side of history,” the goalkeeper had said just before the Liverpool game.

With that, he met the Atletico fans against the chest. In 2014, Courtois was on the “bad side of history” when he lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid as an Atletico goalkeeper.

From rats to beer

Thibaut Courtois’ nameplate at Wanda Metropolitano has been the target of Atletico fans several times in recent years.

From plush rats to spit and beer. The Courtois nameplate has already endured a lot.
