It would be one of the biggest NFL comebacks in recent years: Colin Kaepernick may get another chance after five years. The quarterback once caused a stir with his knee protest during the US anthem.
Football pro Colin Kaepernick could face a return to the American NFL league. The 34-year-old quarterback, who was last on the field in 2017, has been invited to a trial by the Las Vegas Raiders, according to media reports.
Kaepernick would become a colleague of German professional Jakob Johnson if he signed up. The 27-year-old joined the team in the spring.
Kaepernick had recently shown his current level of performance during a training session with NFL scouts. The teams didn’t offer the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback a new contract after kneeling at the national anthem in August 2016. Only the Seattle Seahawks invited him to a trial in 2017, but no agreement was reached.
Out-of-court settlement with the NFL
Kaepernick’s peaceful protest against racism and police violence caused a stir. He himself said at the time: “I will not stand up and demonstrate pride for a flag that stands for a country that oppresses blacks and other people of color.” A gesture that was often imitated afterwards, but was considered disrespectful to the United by the league States was perceived.
In the meantime, there was an out-of-court settlement with the NFL over Kaepernick’s claim that he was subsequently discriminated against.
Kaepernick, once considered one of the best quarterbacks in the world, had led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl final at the end of the 2012 season. He had previously played for the club for six years. After the 2016/17 season, his contract was not renewed.
