Uni makes a good try at the start of the play-off against Gernika (75-82)

Spar Girona closed the regular season of the Women’s League with a victory in Gernika (75-82) which served as a good bench for face-to-face debuts on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the play-off against IDK Euskotren. The locals, unlike the Uni, which did not play anything, could improve the classification and be seventh, which would have allowed them to save a first round for the title against Perfumerías Avenida.

The Girona team, without Gardner (in the morning the club had reported a case of Covid), had control of the first half (35-43) thanks to the triples (6/9) leading the score Drammeh and Mendy. Good minutes also for María Araújo, getting better after her serious injury, and who finished with 16 points leading the Girona offensive. At the start of the second half Uni went from 13 (35-48) with a great Drammeh, and Burke added (38-53) to dominate from 15. The defense existed and the attack, that many days this year had been stranded, it worked like never before. Mendy made it 40-56 from 6.75 to 5 minutes by the end of the third quarter, and Araújo also made it 40-59 from three. Uni had a 10/14 in triples. Silva, from midfield, brought the locals to 13 on the horn to close the half (52-65) with a point of fortune.

Uni got stuck in the last quarter (finished with 10/19 triples) and Gernika put excitement (55-65) with a triple. The locals defended better and Julbe had to ask for time out but the difference dropped to eight (57-65). Araújo and Mendy (57-69) and Palau’s veterans appeared to control the situation. 3 minutes from the end, the Girona team won again by 14 (59-73) and had the duel on track, despite a last attempt by the locals, who were cutting the margin (66-75, 70-77, 72- 79, 75-80), although he would not end up going anywhere and the victory would go to Girona, which he already knew would be third.
