The Real Club Náutico de Palma held its Sports Gala for the 2020 and 2021 seasons tonight. The sailor Joan Cardona Méndez, bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, and the canoeist Adrián Castaño, the first Balearic representative of this discipline in Paralympic Games, were the undisputed protagonists of the ceremony, in which 48 distinctions were awarded for podiums in national and international championships, including the European Optimist champion, Javier García Ollé, and the two-time world canoeing champion Alex Graneri, who could not attend the event because he was concentrated with the national team ahead of this year’s elections

The president of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, Emerico Fuster, described the results of the last two years as “the best in history” of the entity and recalled that the Balearic Islands had not managed to climb to an Olympic podium since 1996.

“We have more than 70 years of history and our first medal came last summer from Joan Cardona; It was a moment that has been recorded forever in the retina of all the members of our club”, assured Fuster, who highlighted in his speech the entity’s commitment “with sport, sustainability, equality, values and the city”.

José Hila, Mayor of Palma, was in charge of presenting the award to Joan Cardona, while Francesc Antich, President of the Balearic Islands Port Authority, did the same to Adrián Castaño. The event was also attended by the Director General of Sports, Carles Gonyalons, who presented the diplomas to the outstanding crews of the Cruiser class.

During the gala, held in the Mallorca Auditorium of the Palacio de Congresos and presented by the journalist Cristina Roig, various videos were shown on the club’s commitment to sailing, canoeing, the environment and inclusive sport, as well as a report by the filmmaker Ugo Fonollá about the #ValoresRCNP program, developed by the sports psychology department.

The Real Club Náutico de Palma was forced to suspend the 2020 Sports Gala and delay the 2021 one due to the pandemic. “We have waited for the health situation to improve to organize this event. Our athletes have made a great effort and have obtained spectacular results. We couldn’t let another year go by without paying them the tribute they deserve.” added Emerico Fuster.
