The European Parliament hopes to recover the sums “unduly paid” to Marine Le Pen

The European Parliament “will proceed to recover the sums unduly paid” to Marine Le Pen, the far-right candidate for the French presidential election, and three other politicians, one of its officials told AFP on Sunday.

“In total, we are talking about 617,000 euros unduly paid,” he added.

The European legislature was behind the referral to the anti-fraud office of the irregularities committed by Le Pen during her term as MEP between 2014 and 2017.

Specifically, he is accused of having embezzled the money received by the political groups of the European Parliament.

“The European Parliament has referred the matter to the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) after discovering some of the irregularities” reported against Marine Le Pen and three other former MEPs, he explained.

“Now we will proceed in the coming weeks to recover the money from the interested parties,” explained the person in charge.

The case was revealed by the French news website Mediapart. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that it had received the OLAF report incriminating Le Pen on March 11.

The document, published in part by Mediapart, refers to expenses that political groups can use within the framework of their mandate as MEPs and that Marine Le Pen and her associates would have used irregularly.

The Office accuses Le Pen and the three former deputies of having embezzled some 600,000 euros.

According to the report, the far-right candidate personally embezzled some 137,000 euros of public money from the Strasbourg Parliament when she was an MEP between 2004 and 2017.
