Siegemund reached the quarterfinals of Stuttgart

Stuttgart (dpa) – For the first time since winning the title in 2017, Laura Siegemund has reached the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart tennis tournament.

The 34-year-old Swabian led 6: 4, 3: 1 in the round of 16 when the Greek world number five Maria Sakkari gave up. Siegemund is in the top eight at her home tournament for the third time.

On Friday she will play Lyudmila Samsonova. The unseeded Russian tennis player made a surprise advance against top Czech player Karolina Pliskova.

Siegemund started the tournament, which is endowed with 611,210 euros, with lower expectations because she lacked match practice after knee surgery. She had received a wild card for taking part in the high-class event, but due to her break she fell out of the top 200 in the world rankings.

The German number one Angelique Kerber had to accept another disappointment with the first round on Wednesday.
