Round of 16 of the DFB Cup: Bayern defeats defending champion BVB

“We had little courage” – BVB flies out of the cup

Berlin Record winner FC Bayern leads the field of eight quarter-finalists in the DFB Cup. After beating defending champions Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the draw for the next round on January 7th, Munich are probably the team everyone else would like to avoid. After FC Schalke 04, VfL Wolfsburg, FSV Mainz 05 and third division SC Paderborn, Werder Bremen, Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt also made it into the quarter-finals on Wednesday evening, which will be played on February 6th and 7th.

The effect of the change of coach was not enough for Borussia Dortmund to win the cup in Munich. Especially in the first half, Peter Stöger saw how much work he had to do during the short winter break in order to really stabilize BVB again in the long term. “It was a deserved victory for Bayern,” said Stöger, who found clear words during the break. After that, Dortmund put Munich under pressure again, but in the end Jupp Heynckes’ chances of another treble remained intact. “We still have to improve a lot. We have now reached a milestone, nothing more,” said Heynckes.

Video but no proof

Everyone in the Bremen stadium could see Werder’s 3-1 win against Freiburg again because it was repeated on the big screens. Unlike in the Bundesliga, there is no video evidence in the DFB Cup so far, so the legitimate protests in Freiburg have had no consequences. That was what happened: Werder’s Jerome Gondorf was offside and actively intervened in the game: he blocked Robin Koch in such a way that he couldn’t clear and Philipp Bargfrede could shoot in for the preliminary decision. The assistant even indicated the offside position with his flag. But referee Guido Winkmann allowed the goal. SC coach Christian Streich called it “madness”. Winkmann later admitted his mistake and apologized to SC captain Nils Petersen. The striker, in turn, apologized for the protests and did not blame the referee. Overall, Freiburg deservedly lost 2:3 (1:2).

Efficient Werkself

Borussia Mönchengladbach had more chances, but in the end Bayer Leverkusen made it through to the quarter-finals. Again strong Leon Bailey made the difference with his goal 20 minutes from time. “All in all we are certainly happy that we won the second half and finally won,” said Bayer coach Heiko Herrlich. “Bailey makes the counterattack ice cold,” he praised the scorer. Gladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria was annoyed. “We didn’t allow much defensively,” he said. “Leverkusen only had one good chance in the second half – but they took advantage of it.”

Eintracht Frankfurt had to work overtime at the second division team in Heidenheim. Only after extra time was the 2-1 victory certain. The Hessians were able to thank Sébastien Haller, who scored the winning goal in the 109th minute. The people of Frankfurt can only enjoy the joy of the successful additional shift for a short time. On December 28th, Niko Kovac ordered his team back to training. The Eintracht professionals have the shortest winter break of all Bundesliga clubs.
