Roland Garros. A battle between France TV and Amazon to broadcast Tsonga’s first round? .

Since the arrival ofAmazon Prime in 2021 at Roland-Garros, there is a conflict of interest in the Parisian tournament between the broadcasters. Before, France TV had all the rights and broadcast all the matches, but the arrival of the American giant has reshuffled the cards. Now both groups must battle to get the encounters they want.

Tsonga: “I play well when it’s hot and it bounces”

And a match is already at the heart of the stakes for the 2022 edition of Roland-Garros: the first round of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. By announcing that he will retire at the end of the tournament, the 36-year-old Frenchman created some expectation around his entry into the running at Porte d’Auteuil. And as indicated RMC Sportthe two broadcasters want to broadcast his first round, which will be the last match of his career in the event of a defeat.

As a reminder, Amazon Prime broadcasts the matches of the Simonne-Mathieu court as well as the “night sessions”, France TV the rest. The streaming giant, which paid a nice amount to acquire its rights, could want Tsonga in a “night session”, Monday May 23 or Tuesday May 24 at 9 p.m. Moreover, a first stone has already been laid in this direction by Thibaut Le Rol, host ofAmazon Primewho recently tweeted: “The time has come for Big Jo! Hats off and thank you for your career, a very beautiful red thread in recent years. See you at Roland to celebrate. In a night session? »

The tennis player from Le Mans recently indicated that he “plays well when it’s hot and bouncy, but I’m not alone…”. A way of indicating that he would prefer to play during the day, with perhaps more crowded stands. The ball is now in the hands of Amélie Mauresmo, director of Roland-Garros since December 2021, who will have to decide.

Note that this debate could concern several matches of Tsonga, if he has a good run, because each new match could be the last. But if he already manages to cross the first round, it will be a personal victory for the Manceau, not spared by injuries recently and whose last success at Roland-Garros dates back to 2019, when he eliminated the German Peter Gojowczyk at 1is tour (7-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3).
