Kevin Gausman had a shutout until the ninth inning and Jordan Romano got a save as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2.
Gausman (1-1) struck out eight batters without walking. He was taken out of the match after allowing Trevor Story to single to start the ninth.
It was Gausman’s seventh hit – all singles – with only one runner reaching second base against him.
Romano entered the game with a runner on the trails and no outs in the ninth. He walked Rafael Devers before giving a double and an RBI to Xander Bogaerts. Devers scored on a ground ball by Alex Verdugo, then Bobby Dalbec was grounded out in the infield.
Romano grounded Jackie Bradley Jr. out for a seventh save.
Gausman has only pitched one complete career game and has never pitched a shutout.
Matt Chapman hit three hits, including a double, and drove in a run for the Jays.
Tanner Houck (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk, striking out four batters in five innings. He will skip his next scheduled departure, to Toronto on Tuesday, as he is not vaccinated against COVID-19 and cannot enter Canada.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora tested positive for COVID-19 Thursday and was unable to lead his team for the final game of the series against the Jays.
Bench instructor Will Venable replaced Cora in the dugout. Cora will not be able to travel with the team to St. Petersburg, Fla., in preparation for the weekend series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Red Sox said Cora, who is vaccinated three times, is suffering from mild symptoms.
