Federal Minister of Justice Marc Buschmann (FDP) has defended the amended Infection Protection Act and the hotspot rules against attacks from the federal states. “A lot of party judo is involved in the criticism. I think it’s a good compromise that does justice to the situation,” Buschmann told the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” (Tuesday edition). “We want as much normality back as is responsible. At the same time, the countries with the hotspot rule remain able to act in the event of an emergency,” said the minister. Representatives of the federal states had complained about imprecise guidelines for when a state may declare a region a hotspot in which stricter rules apply. Buschmann said: “The law describes very precisely in which situations this is the case. Namely when a virus variant spreads that is significantly more dangerous, or when the infection process develops in such a way that there is a risk of local overloading of the health system.” It is about “targeted local measures and no longer about general and comprehensive massive restrictions”. The federal government wants to give people “more personal responsibility again. Anyone who is particularly concerned about falling ill can usually take preventive measures with a vaccination or protect themselves effectively in everyday life with a mask, for example.”
Buschmann also expressed skepticism about general vaccination from the age of 18. “According to the proponents, the potential danger of overburdening the hospitals comes from the group of over 50-year-olds who are not vaccinated, i.e. not from all age groups.”
