Badminton players Joran Kweekel and Mark Caljouw have qualified for the third round at the European championships in Madrid. For Gayle Mahulette, the tournament is over after the second round.
Kweekel played against the Ukrainian Danylo Bosnioek and won 21-16, 21-14. Caljouw had more trouble with the Finn Kalle Koljonen. He won in three games: 22-20, 17-21, 21-10. Kweekel will meet the Irishman Nhat Nguyen in the next round, Caljouw will then face the Israeli Misha Zilberman.
Among the women, Mahulette went down. The four-time Dutch champion lost in the second round to the Scottish Kirsty Gilmour 21-16, 21-11. She was the only Dutch woman to compete in singles.
The Dutch duos that are active at the European Championships have had a good day. The mixed duo of Robintabeling and Selena Piek was too strong in the first round with 21-9 and 21-13 for the Scots Christopher Grimley and Eleanor O’Donnell.
