Aitor Karanka, 48 years old, returns to the Spanish League. He does it at the head of the Granada bench, which yesterday announced the hiring of him as the new coach to replace Torrecilla, who did not survive the team’s defeat against Levante. Mourinho’s former assistant at Real Madrid will take office for the first time on Wednesday at the Metropolitano against Atlético de Madrid.

The Basque’s experience as a solo coach is concentrated in English football, where he has managed Birmingham, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough, a club he was promoted to the Premier League.

With six games to go before the conclusion of the championship, Granada is flirting with relegation (16th, tied on 29 points with Mallorca, waiting for what Cádiz does today at the Camp Nou, with 28).

Karanka is the third coach to occupy the rojiblancos’ bench this season, after Moreno and Torrecilla.
