Djokovic talks about illness after losing final: “It’s worrying”

Novak Djokovic suffered a surprising final defeat at his home game in Belgrade – with a 0: 6 in the third set. The world number one lost to the Russian Andrei Rublev 2: 6, 7: 6 (7: 4), 0: 6 and explained the reason for his low form in the third set at the subsequent press conference.

“I can only imagine that it is due to the illness that struck me a few weeks ago. It’s an individual sport, if something goes wrong, the engine can’t run,” said Djokovic in Belgrade. However, he left it open which illness the Serb caught.

Djokovic on his illness: “It affects my metabolism”

When asked several times, Djokovic explained: “It’s not a corona virus and I don’t want to give any further details, but it’s something that affects my metabolism. It’s unsettling to have that feeling on the pitch. I didn’t feel tired until the end of the second set. The game to make it 5-4 was a long game and that’s when I started not feeling good. That also happened to me in Monte Carlo.”

Djokovic explained that fatigue was never an issue even at the beginning of his tennis career. “So I think it has to do with the illness I’ve been going through, which has been a little bit tough, both physically and mentally.”

Djokovic only played his third tournament this year in Belgrade. He missed the Australian Open in Melbourne because he refused to vaccinate. As a result, he also missed the two Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami.
