All French people eliminated in the first round in Monte-Carlo, a first since 1977

Here is a new sad marker for current French tennis: it is the first time since 1977 that no French player has won at least one match at the Monaco tournament. At the time, in a table of sixteen players, François Jauffret, the only French player, had been eliminated from the start by Wojtek Fibak. But since then, despite some dark editions – only Gérard Solvès had won a meeting in 1994, and the same for Gicquel in 2009 -, never such a berezina had existed.

Since 2010, there has always been at least one Frenchman in the round of 16. But in 2022, neither Benjamin Bonzi, beaten by Dan Evans, Benoît Paire (by Lorenzo Musetti), Ugo Humbert (by Pedro Martinez), Arthur Rinderknech (by Fabio Fognini) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (by Marin Cilic) have passed the cut of the first round. Note that the French n°1 Gaël Monfils had withdrawn due to injury before the tournament started.
