In the 40th series of the TVNET sports program “Champions’ Breakfast”, Freimanis told him what the historic morning of February 24 was like when Russia invaded the territory of Ukraine.

This season, the Latvian basketball player represented the Russian club “Nizhny Novgorod”, which participated in the state open championship or VTB league, as well as in the FIBA Champions League. The attacker was in the neighborhood with his wife and two offspring.

“It was a terrible shock at the beginning! The talk started on Twitter the night before [par karu], but it seemed like nothing serious. I get up in the morning [24. februārī] and I read messages in a friend’s chat – war, war, war. I thought: can’t be! I opened the Twitter, the Internet was already “exploded”. I was in such a shock that I could not even comprehend what had happened. All that day was spent in disbelief and misunderstanding, “the basketball player said of his feelings.

Freimanis was the first Latvian basketball player playing in Russia to break the contract with the represented club. He did so on his own initiative, announcing it to the team leadership on the second day of the war on February 25.

After the termination of the contract, Freimani and his family were faced with the most difficult task – to get out of Russia and return home to Latvia. The original plan for a flight from Moscow to Riga or Helsinki was not possible because European airspace was closed to Russian aircraft.

The basketball player’s family flew from Nizhny Novgorod and St. Petersburg, but then drove to the Russian-Estonian border in Narva.

During the conversation, Freimanis reveals in detail the difficulties he encountered on the way to Latvia, as well as how he and his family were helped by the champion of the Tokyo Olympic Games Kārlis Lasmanis.

There is also a podcast about the mafia money in Italy, which has to be put behind a sweater, Freimanis’ first steps in the Latvian national team and the fulfillment of Kaspars Kambala’s demands outside the square, tanks on the streets of Ukrainian cities in 2014 and his future career.
