If you like to play with tactics, create detailed training plans and find the next prodigy, Football Manager is the perfect game for you. Sports Interactive’s football coach simulator is particularly impressive for its depth, which can even overwhelm beginners at first.
So here are five tips to get started immediately after you start in charge of a team:
01
Find competent staff
As a coach/director, you are not only responsible for a team of players, but also for a staff. Like footballers, the more competent they are, the easier your job will be. Therefore, from day one you must ensure that you have the best possible professionals in your technical team. If management allows you to have a large team of helpers, you should hire a specialist for each training category. Search filters show you which attributes are most important.
The same goes for the scouts, analysts and the medical department: complete the team as soon as possible to benefit from everyone’s skills.
The most important people in a football club are still the players. So you should also dedicate a lot of time to them on your first day. What kind of players do you have in your squad? Who is too expensive for your income level? Who has a contract about to end? Who are the protagonists? These are some of the points you need to know.
The depth chart and team report will help you identify the players you should build your tactic around. If not, just click on player profiles and take note.
03
Pay attention to the youth
Although you know your team, you shouldn’t miss visiting your club’s youth teams. It is not uncommon to find a great talent ready to emerge in the second team, or in the under-19s.
You have to be attentive from an early age, whether to play with the professionals in pre-season, find a suitable club to loan them (those over 18), or even have a place in the first team. You also have to hire for Youth Development positions: the technical team must have high values in this department.
The sooner you establish a tactical approach, the easier it will be to work with coaching staff and players in training. As millimeters and seconds can make a difference in football, you shouldn’t waste valuable time here.
Don’t worry: tactics don’t have to be completely polished from the start. But at least you should have the starting line-up and a rough game philosophy. If you don’t have any idea, tactical presets can help: a small thumb symbol indicates which style of football your assistant considers suitable. In pre-season games, you can adjust tactics to suit you.
Last but not least, you should plan the following weeks. This means organizing preparation games and also establishing strict pre-season training.
The more you make your players sweat before the season, the more resistance they have to injuries. So take them to the limit!
This way, nothing will get in the way of a successful stay, especially if you take care of your team in such a way that the players will follow you without blinking an eye.
