Spain thrashed in a friendly and Portugal qualified to play the World Cup in Qatar

BarcelonaWith the Catalans Jordi Alba and Dani Olmo playing as starters, Spain has easily beaten Iceland’s team in A Coruña in a friendly to prepare for the World Cup. Pedri, Gavi and Ferran played in the last minutes of the match, but Luis Enrique gave them a break in a match where Morata and Sabia shone.

Spain had known for a long time that they would play in the World Cup, but this Tuesday many teams had to play passport to be in Qatar this November. Poland, for example, beat the Swedes 2-0 with a goal from Robert Lewandowski and a goal from Piotr Zielinski, and qualified for the final play-off. Portugal also did so, defeating the stunning Northern Macedonia 2-0, both goals by Bruno Fernandes. Cristiano Ronaldo, then, will be able to play one last World Cup.

In the African qualifying phase, the reigning continental champion, Senegal, has qualified after defeating Egypt in the re-run of the last final of the Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal, then, will play their second consecutive World Cup after a dramatic round of penalties. The Catalan Keita Baldé, an international with her parents’ land, took part in the celebrations. Ghana also drew with Nigeria (1-1); Morocco, easily beating the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Tunisia, defeating Mali.
