U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders called on Major League Baseball Commissioner Rod Manfred to end the major league lockout on Wednesday.

“The 30 owners of major league baseball teams are worth over $100 billion. The value of their clubs has increased by more than $41 billion since they bought them. Mr. Manfred, end the lockout. Negotiate in good faith. Don’t let landlord greed undermine our national pastime,” the 80-year-old politician wrote on his Twitter account.

On Tuesday, Manfred announced the cancellation of the first two scheduled series of the 2022 regular season, after the players’ association turned down Major League Baseball’s last contract offer before a deadline imposed by the owners.

The major league baseball lockout was declared on December 2. It is the longest dispute in the major leagues since the seven-and-a-half-month strike that affected the 1994 and 1995 campaigns.
