World Cup 2014: Löw threatened DFB players with a substitute bench in the final

The players who were on the field were certainly surprised and amazed at what had just happened when they arrived in the dressing room. Joachim Löw, however, knew how to choose his words wisely in order to keep the concentration high and get his men on the ground.

“Löw was the most important thing that day,” said Khedira. “At half-time he said that anyone who made fun of the Brazilians, downgraded his performance or made jokes about the 5-0 lead, he would replace immediately and not consider for the final.”

A very clear announcement from the world champion coach, but it certainly helped bring the game over time appropriately.

“He told us that we should take it seriously and respect the Brazilian national team – more than that, we should respect the fans and the country. We would have had an incredible time here and it would not have ended yet. We have to respect them, they are Brazil, we are Germany, we are equal. So we had to be humble and respectful and end the game on a good note.”
