History of a tragic classic between America and Cali

The imprudence of some fans and the lack of organization in the evacuation zones caused the death of more than 20 people. That Valle del Cauca classic had left great emotions in football but in the end it ended in an unfortunate tragedy. This Saturday at 6:10 pm a Clásico del Valle del Cauca will be played again.

On Wednesday, November 17, 1982, the sixth date of the octagonal final of Colombian soccer. In the Pascual Guerrero the classic was disputed between America, which was the leader, and Cali, which was one point behind. Willington Ortiz put the verdiblancos up but before the first half they came back ‘the mechita’ thanks to Juan Manuel Battaglia and two annotations by Juan ‘Martillo’ Penagos.

At 73 minutes Roberto Mosquera discounted and made the game exciting. With 5 minutes left people getting ready to go out, especially those of the popular grandstands to take public transport. That day there were about 41,000 viewers and the complaint from Deportivo Cali to Hotel Dann was commented on because supposedly several players had Stomach problems because of the food.

As some fans came out of the South Stand, from above some misfits started pissing down. At that moment Amaro Carlos Nadal tied the match and in the midst of the confusion tragedy arose. Some fans were looking to get out to avoid the urine and others to go back in when they heard the goal shout.

In the popular neighborhoods, the inhabitants mobilized to express their bewilderment, Mayor Julio Riascos blamed the misfits and there was talk of a exhaustive investigation.

As is usually the case in Colombia, the tragedy ended in impunity. Those who urinated were not identified and the authorities did not take responsibility for the lack of evacuation zones and crowd in the stadium. The fans later pointed out as responsible a group of people who used to consume and sell drugs on that rostrum.
