Charges against Deshaun Watson dismissed by Texans

NFL quarterback Deshaun Watson no longer has to fear criminal consequences in Houston because of the numerous allegations of abuse against him. A jury in the US state of Texas rejected charges against the 26-year-old football professional after a hearing lasting several hours on Friday. According to information from the “New York Times”, the public prosecutor’s office did not present a tenth case after nine rejections.

The decision initially has no impact on the 22 civil lawsuits filed by women who have accused him of sexual abuse during private massages. Plaintiff Attorney Tony Buzbee pointed out that these proceedings are ongoing.

“A very emotional moment”

According to US media, Watson’s lawyer said they were prepared for a defense. “Deshaun Watson has committed no crime and is not guilty of a misdemeanor,” said Rustin Hardin.

Watson, who had denied all allegations via social media, spoke to journalists for the first time a year after the civil lawsuits became known: “This is definitely a very emotional moment for me. I know we’re far from done dealing legally with what we have to deal with, but today is sure to be a big day.”

Watson had already called for a farewell to the Houston Texans before the allegations of abuse and last played in the NFL at the end of the 2020 season. He was not used last season. The NFL has started its own investigation and only announced on Friday that the league is closely monitoring all developments. US media reported that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers are said to be interested in signing Watson. He is one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League.
