Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Juventus want to relaunch the Super League!

A year ago, the biggest European clubs shook the football world by announcing the idea of a European Super League. An idea which was intended to compete with or even extinguish the Champions League, but also and above all to offer more income to the big clubs, which for the most part were experiencing financial difficulties. But after the anger of the fans and the sanctions of UEFA, the Super League project had ended up being stillborn. At least that’s what we believed.

Of the 12 founding members, only three continued to seek a new formula to re-propose the idea of the Super League. According to information from Telegraph, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Juventus have never given up on this idea and will even announce a new version of the Super League this week. A version with changes to some rules that had angered supporters and football fans. They hope to put public opinion on their side and thus counter UEFA which prevents the creation of the SL.

PSG and Nasser al-Khelaïfi in the sights

The three clubs first want to scrap the idea of permanent members as it was originally. This new version would therefore allow all clubs to have a chance to participate (or not) and therefore better fairness. To qualify, it would be necessary, as for the Champions League, to finish in the first places of the Championship. No club would be guaranteed to play the competition every year. Juventus president Andrea Agnelli is due to speak at a sports industry summit on Thursday and is expected to outline the new Super League proposals. According to the British media, the six English clubs (Arsenal, Liverpool, City, Chelsea, United, Tottenham) have abandoned the idea but the Italian clubs (Inter, Milan and Juventus) and therefore the three Spanish (Real Madrid, Atlético and Barça ) still secretly dream of setting up this project.

The decision to try to revive the Super League comes ahead of a scheduled hearing at the European Court of Justice to challenge what they call UEFA’s “monopoly” stance on European football. The three clubs are also targeting PSG and especially its president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi. The latter is considered much too close to UEFA even more since the episode of the Super League where the Parisian leaders had not joined the project. They denounce the injustice of financial fair play when certain clubs (PSG) are financially supported by States. The fact that Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, president of the beIN group, is the sponsor of the Champions League, is also disturbing. Finally, this new Super League project promises to foster the growth of competitive teams in certain areas where football fans do not have access to top level football. The city of Dublin or Luxembourg are cited.
