Lewis Hamilton breaks silence: “We need impartial commissioners”

MontmelóThe new era of Formula 1 has already begun and has started engines in Barcelona. The Circuit de Catalunya has been the scene this Wednesday of the premiere of the new cars of the ten teams of the World Cup. The deafening sound of the engines has filled the Montmeló track with empty stands (the tests have been private and have not been broadcast on television) and the riders have re-stringed the frog and taken their seats for the first day of pre-season tests. With the start of the Formula 1 season, Lewis Hamilton’s explanations and reproaches have arrived. Commissioners have been the focus of criticism of the British pilot: “We need them to be impartial.”

Last season’s last race in Abu Dhabi still raises dust because he ruled the World Cup in favor of Max Verstappen and Hamilton had to settle for second place. From that day on, silence prevailed. The Briton disappeared from the networks and speculation about a possible farewell hovered over the paddock. As he advanced a week ago, the Mercedes driver never thought of leaving F1, but he did need to disconnect to get completely clean. “I’ve already turned the page on everything that happened and I’m focused on the new course. It doesn’t make sense to look back. Every season finale, especially when you’re my age, of course you think about the future. But I was committed to the team and I like my job, so why leave it? I’m cooler than ever, “he said at the first press conference of the 2022 championship.

After analyzing everything that happened, Hamilton drew his own conclusions. The most shocking has been on the commissioners. “I think we need people who are not prejudiced and super-neutral when it comes to making decisions,” he said. “Some pilots are very, very good friends of certain individuals. Some travel with certain people, and tend to have more affinity with some of those people,” he said bluntly. Mercedes has also called for a more leading role for women in this position and has proposed that there be a commissioner soon. “I don’t think we have many, I think maybe last year there were one or two. It would be amazing if we had a man and a woman as career directors,” he asked.
