37-year-old Australian Samantha Stosur, former world No.4 and winner of the 2011 US Open, has announced that she will end her career in singles after the Australian Open, and in doubles at the end of the 2022 season.

It’s almost the end for Samantha Stosur! On Wednesday, the 37-year-old Australian announced that the Australian Open will be the last tournament she will participate in in singles and then stop the doubles at the end of the 2022 season. “I’m so excited to be very grateful to play my 20th Australian Open in a few weeks ”, writes the current 16th world in doubles and 382nd in singles on his social networks. Many thanks to the Australian Federation for giving me this opportunity to end my singles career during my Grand Slam at home. It really means a lot to me to be able to finish in front of my family, friends and the Aussie fans who have stood by me through thick and thin. JI’m sure it will be a mixture of emotions but I wouldn’t want it any other way because I always thought I would end my career in Australia. However, I plan to play the rest of the year in doubles but that will close the first chapter of my career, ”concludes the one who has been a mother since July 2020, her partner having given birth to a little girl.

Stosur victorious in the last US Open in doubles

Professional since 1999, Samantha Stosur waited ten years to win her first singles tournament, in Osaka in 2009, but she won eight more afterwards, including the US Open 2011 by beating Serena Williams in the final, the year in which it has reached the 4th rank in the world. She also played 16 finals, including that of Roland-Garros in 2010, where she was beaten by Francesca Schiavone. Long partner of American Lisa Raymond in doubles, she won 28 titles and played 15 finals. Samantha Stosur has won four Grand Slam doubles titles: the 2005 US Open and 2006 Roland Garros with Lisa Raymond, and the 2019 Australian Open and 2021 US Open with Shuai Zhang. It is with the Chinese that she still hopes to shine in 2022, and why not add a new Major to her prize list.
