Tennis. Evan Furness, sa vie en double – Tennis

Quimper Open (ATP Challenger 80). Doubles gentlemen.

The characteristic of surprises is that they are occasional. Unexpected winners of the No.3 seeded pair of the tournament made up of Sadiou Doumbia and Fabien Reboul on Thursday in the quarter-finals, Evan Furness and Matteo Martineau failed to create a new sensation this Friday against the top pair of series N.2 for their first joint Challenger semi-final.

Beaten in two sets (6-3, 6-4) by Albano Olivetti and David Vega Henandez, best ranking of doubles players in Quimper (N.86), the two friends were not too disappointed. “We made a few mistakes, me from the baseline and Matteo on the fly. Against doubles specialists, it does not forgive. We should have been more “cautious”, because in doubles, it goes quickly…”

A game that goes well

The men’s doubles is not an exercise that the Pontivyan indulges in so often. “It’s not easy to find partners with whom you make a good duo. You have to get along well but also have a game that goes well with the other. »

With Manuel Guinard, his teammate at TC Quimperlé in interclubs, Evan Furness has a good pair. But the latter was injured just before the opening of the tournament. Suddenly, Evan Furness found himself with Matteo Martineau, his friend from Insep with whom he had already played doubles on the junior and Future circuits and whom he had just beaten in the second round of qualifying for the men’s singles.

“Our doubles entry was decided within three minutes. There was one place left. Charles-Antoine Brézac suggested it to me. Mattéo was next to me and we registered really at the last moment. We know each other well and our way of playing is complementary. We are both quite complete, he better on the volley and on serve, I more solid from the baseline. »

“Beneficial for the simple”

That’s how they managed to eliminate Reboul and Doumbia. Will they put the cover back soon? “If the opportunity presents itself, yes”.

Ranked N.513 in doubles in May 2019, N.1234 before Quimper, Evan Furness knows he has a long way to go to move up the rankings. “That’s not the main goal. But playing doubles is also a way to have fun when you love tennis. And when I’m with Matteo or Manu, I do what I know how to do and that makes me play well. Suddenly, it is beneficial for the simple too. »
