Spain, knocked out of the quarterfinals in Malaga, will play for ninth place with Belgium

The Spanish women’s rugby 7 team will play on Sunday at the closing of the tournament Malaga, third stage of the World Series, the match for ninth place against Belgium, after being left out of the quarterfinals this Saturday due to points difference and beating Fiji by forfeit.

In the morning session on Saturday, Spain was forced to lose by less than ten points against Australia, undefeated leader of the general after his two titles in the Emirati tour in November, to qualify for the quarterfinals as one of the two best third group.

The start of the Spanish, however, was erratic and allowed Australia to monopolize possession in a first period in which a brace by Madison Levi and a try, at the buzzer, by Charlotte Caslick made the pass very expensive (0-15 ).

In the second half, the players coached by Pedro de Matías had the opportunity to score the transformed mark that would have classified them, but some poorly adjusted passes helped the defense of the oceanic players, who rounded off the score with a counterattack on the last play that culminated by Demi Hayes0-20).

fiji, bronze at the last Tokyo Games, should have been Spain’s rival in the semifinal for ninth place, but his absence in Malaga due to covid-19 (he is expected to participate in next week’s tournament in Seville) gave the ‘lionesses’ win without playing, so that this Sunday they will close the tournament against Belgium, winner of Brazil by 12-17.

– Results of the quarterfinals:

Australia, 33 – Canada, 10

Russia, 26 – Poland, 5

France, 33 – Ireland, 5

United States, 22 – England, 17

Sunday’s semifinals will pit Australia against Russia and France against the United States.
