Jannik Sinner has made it into the third round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career – and in an impressive way.

After his safe opening win against Joao Sousa, Jannik Sinner also mastered his second appearance in Melbourne with flying colours. He didn’t give Steve Johnson, number 104 in the world, the slightest chance at 6: 2, 6: 4, 6: 3. The duel, which only ended after midnight (local time), lasted just 103 minutes.

“It’s really fun to play in these big stadiums – especially when, like today, at least a few fans are allowed to watch in the stands,” said Sinner immediately after his smooth three-set victory.

The joy in the game was clearly noticeable to the sextner. With variable shots, a good basic length in the game and a hammer-hard serve, he hit Johnson badly. The 32-year-old American was overwhelmed by Sinner’s game, mostly chasing after his shots and in the end could never really stand up to him.

Sinner announced his claims right from the start of the game and within a few minutes he was 4-0 ahead. In the second set he took a step back and let Johnson come into play for a short time, but he couldn’t do much against his total of 11 aces. On the other side, Sinner returned safely and powerfully. With a break, he finally moved to 5: 4 and later to 6: 4 with his own service. When Sinner started the third round with a break, the game was de facto decided.

Also in round three clear favorite

In the third round, another supposedly solvable task awaits Sinner on Friday. He duels with the world number 120. Taro Daniel for a round of 16 ticket. The 20-year-old South Tyrolean and the Japanese, who is eight years his senior and has American roots, have never faced each other before. However, Sinner should have been forewarned: Daniel pulled through the qualification and the first two rounds of the main draw without losing a single set, most recently he shot the former world number one Andy Murray off the field.

In the round of 16, the winner of the duel between Australia’s local hero Alex de Minaur (ATP 42) and the Spanish veteran Pablo Andujar (ATP 83) awaits the two.
