The sports broadcaster ESPN is relinquishing the rights to MLB games during the week. Allegedly Apple wants to step in.

According to one

New York Post report
Apple TV + is planning to broadcast selected games from the MLB professional baseball league starting next season. Apple’s service would thus show live sport for the first time – and follow in the footsteps of Amazon, which will show the Thursday games of the NFL football league from the fall.

But Apple will hardly invest as much money for the rights as Amazon, which transfers over a billion US dollars to the football league. Specifically, Apple is planning to take over a rights package from ESPN for games played on Monday and Wednesday, which up to now could also be seen on local TV channels. It is not known whether that will remain the case or whether Apple will completely hide the games behind the paywall of its subscription.

Our opinion:

Sure, the Apple TV + program is US-centered, a few exceptions such as the British series “Trying” or the Korean “Dr. Brain” do not yet make an international offer. Despite all efforts, it will stay that way and is not a problem. More than two years after the start of the service, the Apple TV + program is so extensive that it has long been impossible to or want to see everything. It’s great that there will soon be live sports too. But to indulge in the magic of baseball, you probably have to be a North American or a Cuban; from a European point of view, almost every other sport seems faster and more interesting. We’d rather wait for ice hockey – maybe the Oilers will finally get the Stanley Cup again live on Apple TV +? We’d be there!
