Hideki Matsuyama was 277 yards from the hole to make his second shot on the par-5 18th on the first overtime hole at the Sony Open. The Japanese sent his 3 wood shot within three feet of the hole to secure his win over American Russell Henley.

The two golfers fought hard throughout the round, they who were paired in the last group, to finally finish tied at minus 23 after the regulation 72 holes.

Henley started the day two strokes ahead. He showed up in the 18th, for the first time, with a chance to win on a putt that just grazed the cut on the right for a birdie that would have secured his victory.

Matsuyama birdied the game to force overtime before pulling off the feat on the same hole early in overtime.

With a score of 63 in the final round, Matsuyama signed his eighth victory on the PGA Tour.

Kevin Kisner and Seamus Power tied for 3rd with 19 under par, while Michael Thompson and Lucas Glover rounded out the top 5 at 18 under.

Adam Svensson was the top Canadian representative with a tie in 7e up (-17). Fellow countryman Corey Conners finished one shot behind to finish alone in 11e place.

Matsuyama’s eighth PGA Tour win puts him tied with KJ Choi for most crowns by an Asian-born player.
