NFL: COVID-19 wreaks havoc with Panthers

The Carolina Panthers sent players home Monday after a “fairly significant” number tested positive for COVID-19.

Those added to the NFL’s reserve / COVID-19 roster on Monday were defensive ends Brian Burns and Marquis Haynes Sr., defensive tackles Phil Hoskins and Daviyon Nixon, linebacker Shaq Thompson and center Matt Paradis.

That brings the total of Panthers affected to 14, including eight who were already on the roster ahead of Sunday’s 32-6 loss to Tampa Bay.

Several positions are affected and the organization is studying the option of using potential substitutes for Sunday in New Orleans.

Cam Newton is now 0-5 as a starter. Sam Darnold, Carolina’s only quarterback under contract for 2022, finished the game.

Panthers players who made the COVID-19 roster on Sunday were: wide receiver Brandon Zylstra, cornerback Rashaan Melvin, center Pat Elflein, offensive lineman Dennis Daley, defensive ends Austin Larkin and Azur Kamara , safety runner Sam Franklin and quarterback Matt Barkley.
