Michael Masi position within FIA organization adjusted

The FIA has announced the names for all positions within the global organization and, surprisingly, Michael Masi’s position has been updated. It is not his name that is primarily responsible for the regulations in Formula 1, but that of Peter Bayer.

As every year, the FIA announces who is responsible for directing, enforcing and setting all rules within motorsport. The organization is divided into different branches, of which the foreman of the single seater series is looking at the regulations in Formula 1, 2 and 3. That is therefore an important role that was previously reserved for the Formula 1 race director.

Charlie Whiting played for a long time the important role which after his death passed to Michael Masi and Nikolas Tombazis. Masi was responsible for the sporting regulations and Tombazis looked after the technical regulations. Those two names are no longer there, according to the FIA, Peter Bayer will take on both roles.

Masi in Tombazis

Bayer is not an unknown name in the organization. He took on the role of Secretary General and so has been involved in leading the motorsport classes under the FIA for a few years now. It is still unknown what exact functions Masi and Tombazis will eventually get. The Italian branch of Motorsport.com suggested in any case that Tombazis is still working on the technical regulations.

It is also not yet known what Masi will do. It is suggested that Mercedes will no longer have him as race director, but the FIA has not yet said anything about the Australian stepping down as race director. Mercedes therefore denies having been in favor of withdrawing Masi and Tombazis’ positions. For now, nothing is certain about Masi as race director in 2022.
