Mantua, murder with baseball bats: second alleged murderer taken in Spain

Mantua, 11 January 2022 – The carabinieri of Mantua have arrested in Algeciras, in Spain, a 31-year-old of Moroccan nationality that comes believed to be responsible for the death of a 23-year-old and the wounding of a 35-year-old, which took place on 2 July 2021, in the square of a shopping center in Mantua, during aaggression with baseball bats. The arrest was carried out yesterday on a European arrest warrant requested by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Mantua. The young man would be the second alleged perpetrator of the deadly assault which cost the life of Atilio Ndrekai, a 23 year old Albanian resident in San Giorgio Bigarello and the serious injury of Pierfrancesco Ferrari, 35, a fellow citizen of the victim.

The assault, whose motive has never been clarified, took place in the Piazzale della Favorita, a short distance from a shopping center, in the early hours of 2 July. The 31-year-old Moroccan is accused of willful murder and attempted murder. His alleged accomplice, 35, also Moroccan, had been arrested a few days after the crime while he was on a train in Varese to flee abroad, and now he is in prison.

The young man arrested, who fled immediately after the attack, was found following investigations by the carabinieri and coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Mantua, which made it possible to locate him in Algeciras, near the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Civil Guard, on the base of the indications provided by the investigative unit of the carabinieri of Mantua, has brought him under arrest.
