“LeBron told me I was the king of basketball in my area”

LeBron James is a true orange ball expert, and has no equal when it comes to spotting future great talent. Years ago, he notably dubbed an NCAA player who later became champion and MVP! The latter told this fascinating anecdote recently.

And Stephen Curry is one of the greatest point guard in history, few could have predicted him in his early years in the league. Regularly injured ankles, the leader of the Warriors was debated in the early 2010s, many claiming that Californians were betting too much on him. His first contract extension to 44 million over 4 years had also caused a stir at the time, since it was still a large sum. Everything has changed a lot today …

However, some believed it was destined for great things, including LeBron James. The King indeed followed with aplomb the performances of the triple champion during his university studies, on the side of the Davidson university. And what he had seen had confirmed his opinion: the Splash Bro was a legend in the making. During an interview with GQ recently, the Dub revealed that the big compliment that the Chosen One had given him, around the year 2008:

Steph Curry dubbed by LeBron James from 2007-08

I was in second year of college and LeBron was already coming to my games. In fact, I still have the jersey he gave me. He signed a jersey for me. I think it was in November of my junior year. On the wall of my parents’ house in Charlotte, he’s still there. He signed it for me and called me the king of basketball in North Carolina. So I guess it’s like the cheesy thing about idols turning into rivals now.

This is nothing new, the relationship between the two future Hall of Famers goes back quite a long time. It must be said that they have something in common: their place of birth, each one having been born in Akron, in Ohio. If LBJ did all his pre-NBA education in “his” state, Curry has moved a lot because of his father Dell’s career. The latter notably played for the Hornets between 1988 and 1998, pushing the Chef to stay in North Carolina for his school career.

Moreover, as he lifts very well, LeBron was one of the first to see the shooter’s immense potential, even before he hit the floors of the big league for the first time. Just before Steph’s draft in 2009, he had notably issued a very strong prognosis about him. And while it took Baby Face a little while to really break through, he did and is now one of the best players in history, fighting some big battles with the winger over the years:

LeBron James and Stephen Curry aren’t just two self-respecting superstars. They are also two men who have known each other very well for years, long before the Chief was on the roof of the league. The kind of relationship that is good to see!
