14th in the world when she is only a first year senior, Léa Fontaine answered alljudo’s questions about her career and her ambitions. Interview.

Hello Léa Fontaine, to begin with, can you tell us about your beginnings in judo?
I started judo at 4 years old in Reunion, at JCM Saint-Denis, but I didn’t like it. Around the age of 12-13 I practiced swimming, then at 15, watching the Rio 2016 Olympics, it made me want to take up judo again.

As a result, your accession to the highest level was quick…
Yes, in my first year I was fifth in the French championships. I returned to the Pôle Espoirs de la Réunion and I was French junior champion the following year. Then on the recommendation of my coaches Justin Guillemin and Steeven Taurillec, I joined the Pôle de Strasbourg and the Sainte-Geneviève Sports club.

There is currently strong competition among the heavyweights in France with Romane Dicko, Julia Tolofua, or Coralie Hayme. What is your state of mind about this?
Competition pushes me to surpass myself to always do better. My state of mind is to do everything to go as far as possible. I’m a bit stubborn and I do everything to get what I want.

In your opinion, what do you still need to get the very best in the world?
I think I lack a little patience, maturity. There are mistakes that should not be made.

What does working with your mental coach Grégory Boulicaut bring you?
Grégory’s contribution was very important when I arrived in Strasbourg, he really helped me gain self-confidence. It also helps me better manage my emotions.

Is there a sportswoman who inspires you?
Yes my idol has always been Clarisse Agbegnenou, I admire her desire, her determination.

Finally, do you have a quote or motto that accompanies you?
Yes, it is “with a valiant heart, nothing is impossible”.
