“It’s like having the green light to be aggressive”

Jon Rahm is among the golfers who are putting together extraordinary cards at the start of the season and expects more of the same this week in the American Express, which will be played on three courses, including La Quinta Country Club. The No. 1 believes he will have to break the 20-under barrier to have a chance of winning.

“If the wind doesn’t pick up, you’re going to have to go out there and make a good result, but we all know that, so it’s almost like getting a green light to be aggressive,” Rahm said.

“One of the reasons that happens is because after the reseeding, these greens are in such good condition that they allow players to putt and, if you combine that with a good strike of the ball, you are going to be able to get low rounds. “added the Basque player.

In his last tournament, Rahm tied the record for birdies in the PGA Tour in a 72-hole event with 32 in the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Evei. During the third round he matched the course record in Kapalua with 61, 12 under par.

Rahm finished -33, a mind-boggling result that would be enough to win almost any week on the PGA Tour. However, Jon was outclassed by the Australian Cameron Smith, who finished 34 under nearly two decades after Ernie Els set a PGA Tour record of -31 after 72 holes.

“I never thought in my career that I would go 33 under and not win. It was a bit of a bittersweet feeling,” Rahm admitted.

The current champion of US Open will play this week the first three rounds with Tony Finau and two amateurs before the leading 65 pros move into the day on the Stadium Course.
