Ilkay Gündogan: These are the three best players in the world – FOOTBALL

Who are the best players in the world? Fans could discuss this question for hours. According to the Ballon d’Or election in 2021, Lionel Messi (34) is definitely one of them. For the seventh time, the Argentine was able to take the prize.

But who are the best of the best for Ilkay Gündogan (31)? The Manchester City midfielder has his own opinion.

In a Q&A (German: question and answer) on his Twitter profile, Gündogan answered questions from his fans. And a user asked: “Who are currently the 3 best players in the world?”

The answer of the national player (54 caps / 14 goals): Robert Lewandowski (33), Mohamed Salah (29) and Karim Benzema (34).

Surprise: Messi, who is nominated for the FIFA World Player of the Year alongside Lewandowski and Salah, is missing from his list, as is Cristiano Ronaldo (36) or his City colleague Kevin De Bruyne (30).

In the course of the chat, he did not explain why Gündogan chose these three players. But the choice is not entirely unfounded.

Bayern professional Lewandowski broke almost all records last year. In May 2021, he scored his 41st goal of the season against Augsburg on matchday 34, cracking Gerd Müller’s († 75) 49-year-old 40-goal mark from the 1971/72 season. And in the last game of last year, the Pole scored his 43rd Bundesliga goal in the 2021 calendar year in a 4-0 win against Wolfsburg – also a new record.

Mo Salah, currently active for Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, has been in top form in Liverpool since summer 2017, won the Champions League with the Reds and coach Jürgen Klopp (54) in 2019 (2-0 against Tottenham) and the Premier Championship in 2020 League.

And Benzema has won everything there is to win in football with Real Madrid for the past 12 years. With Los Blancos, the French won the Champions League four times (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018), four times the Fifa Club World Cup, three times the Spanish championship and other local trophies.

The Q&A also dealt with other topics. When asked about the toughest midfielder he has met, Gündogan’s choice fell on Chelsea’s N’Golo Kanté (30). De Bruyne and former national team colleague Mesut Özil (33) named Gündogan as “perhaps the two best playmakers the Premier League has ever seen”.

And Messi was also able to record a small success. When asked by a fan “Ronaldo or Messi?” Gündogan replied: “Is it possible to survive a Twitter Q&A without this question? I still go with Messi … “
