“I did not expect to play tennis for so many years”

The tennis player from La Roda (Albacete) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 38, has assured Efe that “never” imagined having a sports career “so long” because “I did not expect to play so many years of tennis.”

García López is practically retired from the courts after not competing “practically at all” in 2021, the year in which his last match was the final of the tournament Albacete city disputed on September 11 before Tommy Robredo, in which he lost 7-5 and 6-4.

The tennis player from Rodeo thus leaves behind a successful professional projection in which he has achieved five ATP titles (Kitzbühel 2009, Bangkok 2010, Casablanca, 2014, Zagreb 2015 Y Bucharest 2015) with a balance of 297 victories in 654 official matches on the world circuit.

He came to occupy the twenty-third position of the ATP on February 21, 2011 in a long career because, as he said, he has been respected for injuries and has taken enough care to dedicate himself to his profession.

As for his best memory, he has cited the game of Open de Australia in view of Carlos Moyà, in 2005, which “marked” his future “because from then on,” after winning a top ten and in a Grand Slam“went on to enter the top 100 in the world.

His worst moment was in a second-round match of Wimbledon in 2005 in which after winning 6-3, 6-3 and 5-4 he made a point “thanks to a winning shot, the linesman gave it to me for good, Djokovic He took off his wristband and came to congratulate me ”.

“But the chair umpire – he continues – made a correction and considered it bad, it drove me crazy and ended up going back to the game, which I lost 3-6, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 and 6-4”.

Now, although he does not rule out officially saying goodbye to the courts by playing a game in an important national tournament, such as the Count of Godó or the Mutua Madrid Open -If he received an invitation-, he remembers everything he experienced and who has supported him.

García López, who will probably offer an official press conference to announce his retirement from the tennis courts, does not rule out continuing to be linked to his sport “in some way in which I could convey what I know to those people who would like to dedicate themselves to playing tennis. tennis ”, has concluded.
