Highest-Paid Female Athletes: Naomi Osaka and the Million-Dollar Badminton Star

The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t dampened the earnings of female sports stars.

According to a new list of annual earnings from Forbes, the 10 highest-earning female athletes earned a total of $167 million before taxes in 2021, a jump of 23% from 2020 levels.

Interestingly, only one of the 10 athletes on the list made more money directly from her sport than she did “off the field”.

Here is a list of the 10 highest paid female athletes and how they made their money. The dollar figures below were calculated by Forbes.

Korda has several sponsorships, including Hanwha Q Cells, a solar cell maker, and UKG, a technology company focused on workforce management, according to Forbes.

Korda’s earnings for the past year were $2.4 million on course and $3.5 million on course.

Barty is the only athlete on this list who has made more money playing her sport than she has made from other endeavors.

Sindhu’s earnings last year were $200,000 on the pitch and $7 million on it.

Serena Williams has held the top earning spot on this list for many years. The 40-year-old tennis legend played just six tennis tournaments last year and fell sharply in the World Tennis Association rankings.

For the second year in a row, Naomi Osaka is the highest paid female athlete in the world.

Osaka has also surpassed every male tennis player in the world apart from Switzerland’s Roger Federer. Federer has been the highest paid tennis player for 16 consecutive years, according to Forbes.

The Japanese tennis star has massive sponsorship deals with Nike, Louis Vitton, Sweetgreen SG,

Tag Heuer and Autograph, among others. In recent years, Osaka has admitted to struggling with mental health issues that forced her to quit some tournaments, even saying “It’s OK to not be OK.”
