DFB Cup: St. Pauli celebrates coup against Dortmund

DFB-Pokal

For defending champions Borussia Dortmund, the last stop in the DFB Cup is surprisingly already in the round of 16. Star striker Erling Haaland and Co. lost 2-1 at German second division leaders FC St. Pauli on Tuesday evening. The “Kiezkicker” are still undefeated in competitive games at home this season and have won their ninth win in their tenth game. Guido Burgstaller also cheered about this, but this time St. Pauli’s top scorer went away empty-handed.

1. FC Köln were also eliminated against a second division team. Hamburger SV prevailed 4-3 on penalties, with Florian Kainz becoming a tragic figure for Cologne. In a duel between two Bundesliga clubs, VfL Bochum defeated FSV Mainz 05 3-1, with a goal from ÖFB team striker Karim Onisiwo being the only result for the guests. Karlsruher SC defeated 1860 Munich 1-0 and thus the last remaining third division team in the competition.

Etienne Amenyido (4th) with the early lead and an own goal by Axel Witsel (40th) brought St. Pauli, who were in the round of 16 for the first time in 16 years, surprisingly on the road to victory even before the break. The only result from the guests was a converted penalty from Haaland (58th) – the 22nd competitive goal of the 21-year-old this season. In the final stages, Dortmund fought back against defeat, but were unsuccessful in front of the goal.

Dortmund’s own goal was preceded by a counterattack via Burgstaller. The ÖFB legionnaire had chances to score St. Pauli’s third goal in the 54th and 55th minute, but narrowly missed the goal twice. “We wanted to play from the start. Of course you also need some luck against such a big opponent. We had that at the beginning. We did it with the first chance and made it 2-0 with the second. After that we worked very well against the ball and closed the center. We defended that well,” said Burgstaller after the game.

Curious Kainz-Elfer makes HSV cheer

In Cologne, Kainz was the negative focus of the decision. The ÖFB team striker was the last shooter in the penalty shoot-out, slipped away with the shot with his left foot and shot himself slightly in the foot with the right, which is why the goal was not recognized by the referee. His compatriot Dejan Ljubicic sunk his penalty to make it 2:2, powerfully high in the middle.

The ex-Rapidler was in the starting lineup, Kainz only came onto the field in the 101st minute. Louis Schaub followed the game from the bench. After extra time it was 1-1. After HSV’s supposed winning goal by Robert Glatzel (92nd), Anthony Modeste (122nd) just managed to equalize with a penalty. In the end, however, the hamburgers had the better end.

Victory guarantee for Bochum was Milos Pantovic with a brace (56./penalty, 59.). On the other hand, alongside Onisiwo, who scored his fourth goal in a competitive game, Kevin Stöger also played through on the offensive. On the other hand, there was a sense of achievement for Christoph Kobald, who played as a central defender in KSC’s 1-0 win at 1860 Munich. Goalie Markus Kuster was absent due to a coronavirus infection. The Munich team was the last third division team to drop out of the competition, and striker Tim Linsbichler was there from the 72nd minute.
