Christian Pulisic is not satisfied with his current situation at Chelsea. The American is bothered by the many position changes.

Chelsea striker Christian Pulisic is struggling with the change of position under coach Thomas Tuchel.

“It’s tough. I didn’t always play in the positions I wanted to play in,” said the American at the press conference ahead of the World Cup qualifier with El Salvador. “I’ve learned a lot and I’m ready to take a position in the next few games that I hope I’ll be more comfortable in.”

At Chelsea, Pulisic was initially used as a winger, but later on Tuchel also placed him in the center of attack and in the full-back position. After a solid start to the season, Pulisic injured his ankle in September and was out for around two months. In the league he has eight starts and three goals. “It was an up and down last year,” said Pulisic. “I’m not exactly where I want to be and how I want things to be right now.”

He was backed by US coach Gregg Berhalter. “I just think it’s great that Christian is struggling to be on the pitch,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if he’s playing as a striker or if he’s playing as a full-back, he does everything to be on the field. I think that’s a sign of character.”

Pulisic: “I have two sides”

According to Pulisic, his exposed position in the US national team puts him under pressure. “When I come to the national team I’m always like, ‘How are things at Chelsea? What about this, what about this?’ Yes, it’s tough,” said Pulisic. Mentally, this situation demands a lot from him.

Still, he’s always really looking forward to traveling to the national team and “kind of taking a step back and enjoying it.” Pulisic: “I have two sides. There’s the footballing side and then the human side. The human side is even more important to me and I’m fine in that regard. But, yes, sometimes it’s a lot.”
