Casper Ruud, seeded 8, withdraws due to injury from the Australian Open

Norwegian Casper Ruud, seeded eighth No.8, was ruled out on Tuesday ahead of his entry into the Australian Open due to an ankle injury sustained in training two days earlier.

“I expected to recover in two days, and be able to get on the court, but when you sprain your ankle, it usually takes longer,” explained the 23-year-old, ranked 8th in the ATP.

Ruud had to face the Slovakian Alex Molcan (74th). It will therefore be a ‘lucky loser’ (eliminated in the third round of qualifying), the Russian Roman Safiullin (149th) who replaces him in the draw.
