From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Brett Maverick Phillips (Seminole, May 30, 1994) is an American baseball player who plays outside roles for the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball (MLB).

A 2012 graduate of his hometown’s Seminole High School, he was selected by the Houston Astros in the 2012 MLB draft. He chose to start playing in the Minor League rather than joining North Carolina State University.[1] starting from the Gulf Coast Astros belonging to the Gulf Coast League, Rookie class. In the following years he continued to climb the levels of the minors, reaching the Triple-A class for the first time in 2017 when he wore the Colorado Springs Sky Sox shirt.

Milwaukee Brewers[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Phillips, whose rights were acquired by the Brewers on July 30, 2015 following an exchange with the Astros,[2] made his MLB debut on June 5, 2017 in the 7-2 home defeat to the San Francisco Giants. During that season he was used in 37 games, in which he averaged .276 with 4 home runs. Between April and July 2018, before being traded, he only found space in the Major League for 15 games and 24 pot appearances, traveling at an average of .182 without hitting any home runs. During this period he often played in the minors with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

Kansas City Royals[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

On July 27, 2018, Phillips and Jorge López were traded by the Milwaukee Brewers to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for Mike Moustakas.[3] In the remainder of the season he was used in 36 games (.188 his batting average, 2 home runs). He then began the 2019 vintage at the Omaha Storm Chasers in Triple-A class, only to be recalled to MLB in August. From there to the end of the year, he scored 30 appearances with a batting average of .138 and 2 home runs. He was little used by the Royals even during the MLB 2020, as he was only able to collect 34 appearances at the pot from the start of the season to August.

Tampa Bay Rays[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

On August 27, 2020, the Tampa Bay Rays acquired him in exchange for Lucius Fox.[4] He made his official debut with the new franchise on September 4, entering as a pinch runner in the eighth inning of a 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins.

On 24 October 2020 he became the surprise protagonist of Game 4 of the World Series between his Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angeles Dodgers: in the lower part of the last inning, with two players of the Rays eliminated and two strikes on the account, Phillips (who was entered the eighth inning as a pinch runner) hit the valid who, combined with a couple of defense errors, allowed to score the two points that overturned the result thus ending the game. Before that, Phillips had never scored a postseason hit.[5][6] Although his gesture led the series to 2-2, it was the Dodgers who later won the title.

In 2021 he was employed by the Rays in 118 games, in which he recorded a batting average of .206 and hit 13 home runs.
