BG Göttingen signs Norwegian guard Harald Frey

The BG Göttingen has found a reinforcement for their squad in search of a reinforcement. The basketball Bundesliga club has signed the Norwegian point guard Harald Frey. The 24-year-old comes to Göttingen from the Spanish second division club Unicaja Banco Oviedo and has been given a contract until the end of this season with an option to extend it for the coming season. “I’m glad we finally found someone to reinforce the guard positions,” said BG head coach Roel Moors. “Harald has the ability to play pick and roll and is also a good shooter. I think that with his mentality he fits in well with our team.”

Frey started the 2021/22 season in Oviedo, for which he was on the floor last season. In 16 games, the Norwegian received around 32 minutes of game time, was his team’s top scorer with 16.0 points, got 3.6 rebounds and gave 4.6 assists. The Oslo native improved his stats from last season, which was his first as a pro (6.6 points/1.7 rebounds/2.0 assists).

The BG newcomer made his debut in the 2012/13 season as a 15-year-old in his home country’s first division with Bærum Baskets, not far from Oslo. Two years later, at the age of 17, Frey was a top performer for the Baskets and spent an average of around 35 minutes on the floor (15.0 points/3.7 rebounds/3.4 assists). In 2015, the guard switched to the Centrum Tigers in the Norwegian capital and improved his performance again (16.9 points/4.7 rebounds/4.6 assists). Since he played as an amateur in his homeland, Frey was able to go to the United States after graduating from school to continue his career as a college basketball player.

From 2016 to 2020, Frey wore the Montana State Bobcats jersey 127 times and only once in the four years did he not start his team. In his senior year, the Norwegian had 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists.

Moors has filled the first of two vacancies in his squad and relieved Kamar Baldwin and Stephen Brown to build up the game. Frey was already expected in Göttingen on Wednesday. “He will play against Heidelberg at the weekend – if everything goes well. But I can’t say for sure today,” reported the BG head coach shortly after the announcement of the new signing. The search for a player for the center position continues.
