In a report released today by the New York Post, Apple is said to be in “serious talks” in negotiations for the broadcast rights for Major League Baseball. Apple has been rumored to explore sports rights for some time.
Presumably, Apple would group sports streaming under Apple TV +, or some sort of complementary level. The Post says if a deal is made, Apple will start broadcasting MLB games starting next season.
The exact details of the deal were not disclosed. However, the sports package that would be on the table is the Weekday National Games, which was owned by ESPN until recently.
Apple has reportedly been in talks with various sports groups for some time, including talks with the Pac-12 conference previously reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Over the past two years, Apple has significantly ramped up its investment in content services, including billions of dollars spent producing Apple Original movies and TV shows for its Apple TV + streaming service.
Live sports are becoming more and more important in streaming wars, and it makes sense that Apple – rich in money – would want to participate. On the software side,. also recently found code references indicating that Apple is investing in sports-related features for its operating systems.
