Matteo Berrettini made it to the round of 16 at the Australian Open. But he was struggling a lot.

The number 7 in the world rankings defeated the young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 31) after 5 sets 6: 2, 7: 6 (3) 4: 6, 2: 6 and 7: 5 (5). The 18-year-old Alcaraz, who is already being celebrated by tennis experts as the “new Nadal”, offered Berrettini a fight on an equal footing.

Berrettini had to stretch quite a bit against Alcaraz. The 25-year-old was only able to prevail in the super tie-break of the 5th set. After 4:13 hours, Berrettini finally converted the match point. But Alcaraz has shown that the future belongs to him.

In the round of 16, Berrettini now meets the winner of the game between the American Sebastian Korda (ATP 43) and the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta (ATP 21). Another Italian, on the other hand, was eliminated. Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 26) lost to the young Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (ATP 77) in 4 sets. Kecmanovic is now dealing with Frenchman Gael Monfils (ATP 20).
