Video: the heroic save of Camilo Vargas in Mexico – International Football – Sports

Colombian Camilo Vargas stopped an offensive by Brazilian Higor Meritao on Thursday and saved Atlas a 0-1 victory over Pumas UNAM in the first leg of the Mexican Apertura semifinal.

The Argentine Julio Furch converted a goal from the Colombian Julián Quiñones and thus the Atlas of the Argentine coach Diego Cocca was one step away from his first final in this century.

The Atlas bet on its strength, defense, which is the best in the championship; closed the access roads and dried up the attack of the university students of the Argentine coach Andrés Lillini, without threats in his stadium.

In the 4th minute, Cocca’s side came close to taking the lead with a cross into the box, but Fuch miscalculated when it came to finishing off with his head. Atlas had possession of the ball 53-43 and confirmed their dominance in minute 43, when Quiñones gave an assist to Furch, who shot from outside the area with his left foot to get the 0-1 that froze the local team.

Concentrated, with order, the Atlas did not allow liberties to some Pumas with few variants away from the team that last weekend surpassed the América of coach Santiago Solari and eliminated him in the biggest surprise of the tournament so far.

Desperate, Lillini made changes, but the most he managed was to create a goal threat in the 83rd minute with an arrival from Argentine Juan Ignacio Dinenno, frustrated with a timely sweep by Peruvian Anderson Santamaría. In 87 Dinenno again stepped on the area; provoked a corner kick, but Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas cleared safely.
