After Raymond van Barneveld, Vincent van der Voort was the second player to test positive for Corona at the Darts World Cup. The “Flying Dutchman” was withdrawn from the tournament. He had spent the past few days with Michael van Gerwen.
Er is Michael van Gerwen’s best friend. It is therefore hardly surprising that Vincent van der Voort and the number three in the world rankings spent the Christmas days together in London. Both live in the player’s hotel at the Darts World Cup, train together, eat and drink together.
Now, however, the longstanding friendship between men could influence van Gerwen’s big goal: the 32-year-old wants to crown himself world champion at the Darts World Cup on January 3rd. The problem: The corona virus was detected at van der Voort on Monday.
Positive Dutch people
His test, which all 32 players still in the tournament must prove after the holidays, was positive. He is not allowed to compete in his third round match planned for Monday evening. James Wade moves into the quarter-finals without a fight.
Van Gerwen is only challenged against Englishman Chris Dobey on Tuesday evening. So far, the game is still scheduled. In view of van der Voort’s test results, however, “Mighty Mike” is likely to be worried that the virus will also be inside.
As the first player at this World Cup, Raymond van Barneveld published a positive test result on Christmas Eve. He was eliminated from the tournament against Rob Cross the night before. Last year, Martijn Kleermaker – also from the Netherlands – had to leave the World Cup due to a positive test before his opening match.
